Wind Down / Wound Up

Woo hoo! That short week went by fast. Unfortunately, we endured a lot of stormy weather during the week that has made me a little stir crazy. Luckily, tells me we should be having a lovely, dry weekend. As the work week winds down, WO+SF and crew are getting wound up for the weekend.

  • I always loved The Show is the Rainbow and now Darren King has another band, Touch People. They are playing tonight at O'Leavers with Malaikat Dan Singa and Last Good Tooth.
  • I always have to be in a very specific mood to be able to go go a movie. However, I am REALLY excited about this new film, Frances Ha, showing at Film Streams. Just so you know, Mindy Kaling tweeted about the movied today: "Frances Ha is my favorite movie this year. Depicts female friendship in the most accurate & funny & loving way." So now I MUST see this movie.

  • It's that time of year again that Taste of Omaha rolls around. Some of Omaha's favorite restaurants get together at Lewis & Clark Landing and dish out their culinary creations. We went last year and we will absolutely be gettin our grub on Saturday afternoon as well.
  • Once again, Benson closes down its streets for the Benson Beer Fest. It's simple, pay $30.00, get unlimited beer from breweries all over. We almost wish we drank beer just so we could go.
  • Don't forget to get your fresh veggies, bread, and flowers at the Omaha Farmer's Market

Bring it on in to Brownville (Flea Market)

This past weekend Kerry and I jumped in my car and drove 60 miles south to attend Brownville's annual summer flea market. The market itself was huge and there was no lacking of antiquated items or ironic t-shirts worn by market attendees. Nebraska's finest, really.

Brownville is an adorable little town, much like a Stars Hollow. It's main street it made up of small shops and historical buildings. There's a broom store which luckily had a stand at the flea market, Kerry reluctantly walked away from it empty handed.

Walking through the piles upon piles of stuff I couldn't help but imagine how these traveling gypsies live, going town to town hocking jewelry, bottles, old pots and pans, family photos, it's all just a little odd. As much as I love looking through the remnants of other people's pasts, the Brownville flea market was a little overwhelming. There was just so much shit to go through and there are only so many picnic baskets you can pick up before it dawns on you, but I don't really need a picnic basket

And it wouldn't have been worth the trip if we didn't indulge in some fair foods. We didn't realize it was going to be so hot the day we went, and while most opted for ice cream cones or sno-cones, I had to get some of that delicious processed nacho-cheese while Kerry treated herself to a funnel cake (and toppings!).

I ended up walking away with a ring ($15) a plate ($2) and a bag of beef jerky for Coops ($3)

Oh and there was this too -

PS the title of this post comes from here, but it took every ounce of me not to title it Browntown. Maturity right?

Saturday Jams #19

Welcome to Memorial Day weekend! We're definitely excited to get our day-drink on and party down over the next few days. Though, we're also pretty disappointed we won't be seeing Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings on Monday. Oh well. Summer fun will continue without her. Anyway, I've been in a real post-punk mood this week which I think will spill over into our driving journey down to Brownville today. Enjoy the long weekend and party hard bros!!

Echo & The Bunnymen - "Lips Like Sugar"
This is just a really lovely song that always puts me in a great mood. It's a song that makes me want to roll down all the windows and drive along a back highway like they did in movies in the '90's.

Pulp - "Common People"
There was this one Sunday night during the beginning of the year when I was out late at O'Leaver's because I didn't have to work the next day and this song came on. I was more than a few drinks in when a bunch of kids who just came from the OEA awards busted in. They immediately took over the jukebox and this Sunday night turned into a massive dance party (did you know the crowd at O'Leaver's are actually big Robyn fans?). It was such a randomly fun night and this song will never cease to make me wanna dance.

Wind Down / Wound Up - Memorial Day Weekend Edition!

I wouldn't say I LIVE for long weekends, but this long weekend couldn't have come at a better time. I even took Friday off to make it a 4-day weekend. We have a lot planned this weekend so we really hope the weather doesn't ruin it all. As the work week winds down, WO+SF and crew are getting wound up for MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!!! (It's the little things in life, people.)

  • The We And I is a story about a group of high schoolers from the Bronx and is directed by the amazing Michael Gondry. Do yourself a favor and watch the trailer, then go see this at, where else? Film Streams!
  • Head to O'Leavers for a great show! The So-So Sailors play AND a play "Wu World Woo" is being shown, which is pretty cool and music from Electric Chamber Music accompanies the play.
  • If you're looking for a new restaurant to try, head to West O and go to Louie's Wine Dive. If you like to try new wines, this place is for you. They have wine on tap! And I'm especially interested in their four flavors of bruschetta.

  • We will be heading down to our favorite small town, Brownville, for their annual Spring Flea Market!  This charming town is only about an hour away and we have been visiting at least once a year for the past few years, partly because our favorite used book store, The Antiquarium, moved into an old gymnasium a few years ago. This town is ADORABLE and we have written about it before. They have a store where you can be home made brooms, that are guaranteed to last a lifetime. We hope to see you down there!
  • Thanks again, Film Streams! They have brought one of my favorite movies of all time, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, back to the big screen! Of course I own this on DVD, but it's just not the same. This is playing on both Saturday AND Sunday.
  • Free admission to the Joslyn Museum goes into effect today. That's right, folks, from now on it is absolutely FREE to go to the Joslyn, not just Saturday mornings before noon, but every day.
  • Petshop is having their monthly reading and book exchange. Three poets will be reading and attendees are encouraged to bring a book to exchange with a fellow attendee. A great way to get and give a new book.
  • Uncle Jesse is in town! Well, John Stamos, and the Beach Boys, are in town. They will be playing together at the new River's Edge Park for a free show.

  • This would be a great weekend to get down to the Henry Doorly Zoo. We are so, so lucky to have one of the best zoos in the world. Even if the weather is a little dreary, you can always go to the indoor displays, like the aquarium (my fave), the jungle, or the desert dome. Plus, the zoo has a new Komodo dragon on display!
  • I LOVE seafood, and it can be hard to find good and inexpensive seafood in Omaha. Thankfully, we have a new seafood spot, Plank Seafood Provisions. I'm really excited to give this place a try and eat some tastes of the ocean.
  • Of course, the Aksarben Farmer's Market is every Sunday. Pick up some yummy provisions for your Memorial Day cook out!
  • As we are sure you all know, Arrested Development Season 4 gets put up on Netflix today! Have a viewing party with your friends, cuz none of you ain't gotta work in the morning.

  • We usually have some sort of barbecue on Memorial Day, but the weather may not allow that this year. It's always a fun day to cook out and sit out in what is usually warm weather, toss a frisbee, play some badminton. We will just have to see if this is all possible!
  • I really, really, really hope that Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings at River's Edge Park does not get rained out. I love me some Sharon Jones and the last show she played here was amazing. Her voice sounds just like her recordings and she has an insane amount of energy.

P.S.: Chickens don't clap.

Not So Secret Garden

For my mama's last birthday I gifted her a membership (+1 guest because I'm a freeloader) to the Lauritzen Gardens. This week, during an overcast day, we finally made it down there. It's truly a beautiful, serene place where there's no lack of beauty, even on the grayest of days.
