Saturday Jams #42

Did you survive the holiday without a breakdown or poplin g a button on your pants? Yeah, we did too. Mostly because we opted not to wear pants. Here's hoping you're spending the rest of your weekend relaxing after holiday madness and catching up with some good friends over many drinks. It's the last day of November, so get out there and enjoy it!

The Echo-Friendly - "Same Mistakes"
I've been re-watching Girls again and this song is really speaking to me right now. I love the slow beat and I love the lyrics.

Robyn - "Dancing On My Own"
I finally broke down and bought this song earlier this week. Needless to say this is going to be my break-up jam.

Wind Down / Wound Up - Holiday Edition

Happy turkey day! We hope your spending the day with your loved ones and gorging on stuffing, turkey, green bean casserole, rolls and lots of potatoes! Enjoy these next  couple of days off and try to embrace your family's craziness, followed up by much needed time with your friends. And don't forget to say what you're thankful for! If you need an escape plan or just want to keep busy over the holiday weekend (we suggest avoiding the madness that is Black Friday) here's what's going on in this fair town of ours -

THURSDAY November 28th

  • After you eat and nap off the food/wine, head downtown for the lighting of the Gene Leahy mall. It starts at six and be sure to dress warm and bring hot chocolate.
  • They say Thanksgiving night is one of the busiest night for bars in the year. Gather a group of friends to commiserate how your quality family time went and what your crazy aunt/uncle did. We typically end up at Krug Park, but get there early so you can grab a table.
  • Up at Pageturner's in Dundee you can check out Lincoln's Twinsmith play a small show. And it's free!

FRIDAY November 29th
  • In grand traditions, there's a Husker game today. Head down to O'Leaver's to watch it, since half of the club roots for Iowa and the other half Nebraska, it should make for an interesting afternoon.
  • Apparently Benson is jumping on the retail bandwagon and encouraging the neighborhood to dine, drink or buy in Benson. So go up there and support Green Friday!
  • Tonight at the Slowdown catch Cure and Pixie cover bands - Fear of Ghosts and Surfer Rosa. These bands only play once a year, so take advantage!

SATURDAY November 30th
  • Go out and shop Small Business Saturday! Tons of places around town are running specials. Scout, Paperdoll, Hoover Studio, Legend Comics, Le Quartier, Denim Saloon,
  • Speaking of which, Hello Holiday is hosting an in-store event today from 11 - 7. Stop in and try on that dress you've been eyeing for months and finally INVEST IT IN.
  • Another weekend, another awesome craft fair. This time it's at the Boiler Room Studio so go there and grab a homemade gift for someone on your holiday list!

SUNDAY December 1st
  • Happy Jay Z day! Listen to The Black Album in its entirety before heading down to the show in Lincoln.
  • I'm going to be a Dundee resident soon, so I better familiarize myself with the area. The Dundee Gallery is a place I've only visited once, during Dundee Day. I'm going to have to stop by today since they're hosting a holiday show
  • Head to Omaha Writer's Group this afternoon at 4 up at Petshop for a little writing and a little critiquing.
  • It's gonna be a chilly one out there and by chilly I actually meant chili - O'Leaver's is hosting their annual chili cook-off today so if you haven't stuffed your face full of food enough this weekend, continue to eat, drink and be merry.
  • That time of year is here again - Jake's Mustache Competition is today! Seriously, this event is always pretty fun and it's a great way to end that whole Movember whatever.
Happy Thanksgiving y'all!

Spanksgiving '13

This past weekend we co-hosted one of our favorite annual events - Spanksgiving! This year we had about 11 guests come over to Kerry's new house to eat, drink and be merry. Here's a breakdown of our day -

We started out by running some errands. Trader Joe's, Nobbies, an unexpected trip to Joann's Fabric and finally Costco - it was a busy morning picking up some last minute details. While we were at Nobbie's we wondered over to the costume section where we came across this strange mannequin. I'm not sure why it was all wrapped in blue like this, it was like something out of a Dario Argento movie...creeeeepy.

Then it was party time. We finished making floral crowns for our female guests and made our punch and set the table. Kerry donned her R. Kelly apron as we finished the side dishes we were contributing to the night.

Our guests began to arrive and so did the massive turkey. We hung out for a bit over drinks and dips  before we gorged ourselves on an amazing meal including home-grown vegetables, mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, macaroni and cheese, stuffing, green bean casserole and homemade rolls. Everything was so delicious!

After dinner our friend Becky, who is an amazing chocolatier, made us all hot chocolate which was thick, rich and provided the perfect end to our meal. Later on, we played Cards Again Humanity and worked off some of those calories with laughter. All in all it was a pretty successful evening and while I wish I would have taken maybe a few more photos of everyone in attendance, I'm glad I sat back and really enjoyed the event! Here's hoping you al have a fantastic Thanksgiving!

PS - Aren't are friends the cutest?

Monday Evening Meditation

Web Wilderness / Branching Out

Happy holiday week! Hopefully it's a short one for you, it's only a two-day week for me. Huzza! Having the day before Thanksgiving off will give me some much needed time to relax before the hustle and bustle of spending "quality time" with my family. I don't think I stand alone here when I say that my family exhausts me. While I love them, mommy's definitely going to need a glass of wine in her hand at all times. So since it's a short week, take advantage of that fact with a break from your work with these internet findings...
  • Are you in charge of bringing wine to your Thanksgiving meal? This year I am because otherwise, I'd end up being forced to drink white zinfandel or moscato since apparently my parents only drink super sweet wines now. Lucky for me, my dear friend over at Stalk My Kitchen comprised this awesome list of wines to serve on the big day. Lord knows we all need a little wine to deal with our relatives for extended periods of time.
  • Speaking of spending time with your dysfunctional family, here's a look at 25 fictional families who will make your family look normal.
  • Around these parts, we're a little obsessed with R. Kelly. He has the voice of an angel and the mind of a sex-god. Rolling Stone recently gave him a variety of ridiculous topics to make up lyrics for, and to no surprise, he agreed to do it. The results are pretty amazing.
  • This is probably the best use for a Moleskin journal I've ever seen.
  • Have you watched the official trailer for season 3 of Girls yet? Flavorwire outlines everything we can expect in the upcoming season here. Eep, I'm so excited!!
  • If I had to describe how I want my life to be over the course of this winter, it's simple. I want to purge my belongings and only keep the essentials. I want everything to be neat, deliberate and clean. Even when it comes to my personal style, I want to dress simple - which is why this collection of images of plain white tees really speaks to me.
  • Doesn't this make you want to start decorating for Christmas?
  • Speaking of which, I think this will definitely be my make-up go-to this season.
  • This spread from Vogue India is just beautiful.
Bebop has been so incredibly cuddly as of late. Maybe it's because it's cold outside, or maybe he knows I'm going through something, but either way, I'll take it.

Saturday Jams #41

Happy Spanksgiving y'all! We're SO excited to gather all of our friends together tonight over at Kerry's wonderful new house to literally break bread. Our errands are all done and now we're just taking it easy before the night's festivities - and drinking some wine in the meantime as well. Hope you're all enjoying this pre-Thanksgiving weekend!

Tom Brosseau - Cradle Your Device

This would be a great song to play during our dinner tonight, it's light, catchy and fun.

HAIM feat. Lorde -"Strong Enough"
This live cover popped up in my blog feed today and I'm a little obsessed with all of the girl power going on here. That Lorde has the most beautiful voice even though I'm not sure what the fuck she's doing with her hand while she sings.

Wind Down / Wound Up

Cheers to the weekend! It's been kind of a rough week, but with the snow comes a new season and a new chance to start over. An ending always means a new beginning and I can't wait to see what my new beginning has in store for me. We're spending this weekend in the comfort of our friends, over lots of good food and drink. Are you celebrating a pre-thanksgiving friendsgiving? We always like to take the bite of mandatory family-time with a grain of the family of our choosing. So while we're winding up to co-host Spanksgiving '13, here are some other Omaha happenings to keep you busy in this cold, cold weather.
FRIDAY November 22
  • Looking for a good meal tonight? OWH just raved about the new Italian eatery, Avoli, located in Dundee in the old Travato's space. I dined here for my birthday last month, and it was absolutely delicious. I'm not sure how I missed the fact that they had gelato, but I guess that just means I'm going to have to go back to try it out. One recommendation that I will make is to go with a group of people. It's a family style restaurant so order a bunch of different items and share!
  • Uh, how is the Cat Power show happening already?! It feels like it just got announced like two weeks ago?! This beautiful lady is playing at the Slowdown and here's hoping this time she won't cry (according to legend the first time she came through Omaha, she was heckled so badly she cried and ended the show early. ugh, we're the worst).
  • Since we finally got hit with the blistering cold, head to a warm bar. We recommend The Trap Room which is located just across the way from the Slowdown or Josephine's which is tucked away in a neighborhood just south of Leavenworth Street.
SATURDAY November 23
  • Today marks our second annual Spanksgiving celebration! We'll be out all day making runs to the likes of Costco and Trader Joe's in preparation for the most wonderful day of the year. We can't wait to stuff our faces with all of the deliciousness our amazing friends are bringing to share. Check back next week to see how everything went!
  • If crafting is your thing, you'll want to head south to the Bancroft Street Market for Omaha Craft Mafia's annual holiday market. Hand-made gifts are always the best so pick up some locally made goods for your family and friends! I mean, the name of the event is The Great Craftsby. It doesn't get any cuter than that.
  • The Bitch is Back - Elton John is playing at the brand-new arena in Lincoln. Not many tickets are left, so if you want to catch this candle in the wind, you better jump on buying your tickets.
SUNDAY November 24
  • If you're in the mood for music, head to O'Leaver's to watch our friend's band Goon Saloon sling some tunes.
  • Happy Feature V day Filmstreams enthusiasts! I've gone to this event twice in the past and it's absolutely incredible to hear these highly regarded directors and actors talk about their repertoire. I mean, I feel like all I have to say here is BRUCE DERN Y'ALL!
  • In case you haven't checked out Feature V guests of honor's new film Nebraska yet, head to Filmstreams as it's exclusively showing here and apparently it's the only film on their calendar.
  • If you're looking to wind down with a drink tonight (or do a little Sunday Funday drinking) head to Hiro 88 downtown - or at the Railyard in Lincoln - for all-day happy hour. I went here last week and had the most delicious dirty vodka martini (picutred below). One thing that will definitely be coming back in my household is cocktail hour.

Spanksgiving Preview - Floral Crowns

When we saw this DIY on A Beautiful Mess for fresh floral crowns, we knew we just had to test it out for our Spanksgiving celebration. Turns out, it's an incredibly easy tutorial to follow and the activity itself is very relaxing.

We went to our local Trader Joe's for the flowers. A $5.99, $3.99 and $1.99 bouquet was more than enough to create two crowns, and we filled up these trial runs pretty full. For our Spanksgiving celebration, we'll probably use some smaller flowers, as the crowns we made the past weekend were a bit heavy for an entire night's wear.

Also, per yesterday's post, I just had to buy this dress from Hello Holiday. It is just too perfect for the event. One of my friends on Facebook joked that I look like the Queen of Fall and I'm entirely ok with that idea.
