Wind Down / Wound Up

I know I only worked four days this week, but goddamned am I ready for the weekend. Who else is absolutely OVER this cold weather?! Yeah, I hear you there. The brutal cold makes it nearly impossible to motivate myself to leave the warmth of my couch, blanket and of course a certain 75 pound dog who just insists on snoozin' on the couch too. Omaha, I truly hope this is my last winter with you for a while, because I don't think I can take another.

Anyways, let's drop the sad sack act. It's Friday and as our work week winds down, WO + SF and gang are getting wound up for the weekend!

FRIDAY February 27th
  • We're off to dinner tonight at Lot 2. Neither of us have been in quite some time and personally, I can't wait to order that double kale salad, fries and all of the drinks.
  • There a reading tonight at the Omaha Healing Arts Center downtown featuring Erin Belieu. All proceeds ($5 to get in) will benefit the Central High School English Department, helping them to continue their tradition of excellence in literary studies. So obviously, you should go to this.
  • Restoration Exchange Omaha is a great organization dedicated to educating and motivating the local community to restore and preserve older properties. Tonight, they are hosting a reception at the Pella in the Blackstone District for their conference which will be ongoing this weekend.

SATURDAY February 28th
  • Uh, there's a free terrarium seminar today at Mulhall's! What?! It starts at 11 and you don't even need to register for this gd thing, just show up!
  • From 4 - 7 today there's a record swap at Brother's Lounge where you are bound to find that one record that will change the rest of the course of your life. Seriously. There's going to be some really great shit here. Don't miss out.
  • I keep seeing my friends post pictures from the latest exhibition down at Kaneko - Fabric of Survival//Fabric Legends - and all of it looks pretty neat-o. I must get down there because they have a piece by Nick Cave I really want to see IRL.
  • There's an all-girl Beastie Boy tribute band (called She's Crafty) playing tonight at The Barley Street. So you should probably just go ahead and see that.

SUNDAY March 1st
  • THANK GOD WE MADE IT THROUGH FEBRUARY Y'ALL.
  • On a recent trip to Nite Owl, I squealed because I saw Corkscrew opened a location in the Blackstone District. I don't think it will be replacing my eternal love affair with La Buvette, but it is awfully nice to have another wine bar in the area. Today Corkscrew is open from noon to 8 pm.

Please don't give us any attitude, it's the gd weekend.

The Magnificent Hooters Hotel

Because when your group of five friends that you've known for over ten years plan a trip to Vegas, there's only one plausible place to stay.

Honestly, we had a pretty great ((and of course bizarre)) experience at Hooter's. Of course the bizarre tended to outweigh the great. Especially when you return to your room after 2:30 in the morning and there are remnants of a  chicken wing left outside of your door.

One Day

One Day, I will be a white-haired woman, living in the desert, wearing all of the gemstones.

Badger Body

I don't know why, but I think I find this equally hilarious and offensive for reasons I can't explain.

In Rapture ((Week of Feb. 23))

  • If you are a girl who was alive in the 1990's, Daria was probably one of your favorite shows and the character for whom the show owes its name was one of your personal heroes. Wait, i really shouldn't use the paste tense there, because it's still very true. If you have Hulu Plus, catch up on old episodes here

  • These embroidered landscapes by Teresa Lim are just simply beautiful. I've been thinking a lot lately about how I need to focus more time to creative endeavors, and embroidering was always a hobby I really enjoyed. Maybe it's time to get back to it.

  • I'm so digging this fashion photography from Tejal Patni. Sometimes fashion takes itself so seriously, it's always refreshing to tap into that whimsical, storytelling feature fashion displays. Plus all of the color here is just fantastic.

  • On the opposite scope, these photographs by Eddie O'Keefe are jarring but beautiful.

Wind Down / Wound Up

Sayonara suckers, I'm off to Vegas for the next four days!

Don't be too jealous though (nah, who am I kidding, be jealous) because there are some pretty fun events going on this weekend in Omaha too.

FRIDAY February 20th
  • Some of my favorite Omaha dudes are playing tonight at O'Leaver's. Catch Noah's Ark Was a Spaceship, Timecat and Saturn Moth tonight for only $5!
  • If you're up in Benson, stop in at Lot 2 for some Polish Food while you're drinking all of the beer at Beer Week.
  • It's Lent or whatever so Fish Fry's are back. Personally, I can't stand these events because I dislike 1) Fish 2) Beer 3) Organized Christian-based religions, but people really go apeshit over some fried fish and beer and Jesus. It seems any church with the word 'Holy' in it seems to be a good choice if you want to get your fish fry on.

SATURDAY February 21st

SUNDAY February 22nd
In preparation for my trip to Vegas, I invested in this pair of flats from Dr. Scholls. Seriously, Dr. Scholls, so they're super comfortable and surprisingly super fashionable.

This. Goon.

Is currently missing an eyebrow because my folks are apparently living their lives by frat rules now and after spending 24 hours with them experienced this casualty for being the first one to fall asleep.

Don't worry, he's doing just fine.

Homemaking Hummus

Homemade hummus is extremely easy to make and obviously, is more customizable to your tastes ((hello all of the garlic)). To my dismay, it did take me multiple trip to find Tahini (Pro-tip: Go to a natural grocer or Trader Joe's first) however the outcome is simply delicious. For my first attempt at homemade hummus, I used this recipe, however I think I might be ready to branch out and do some experimenting (MWAHA!)

Hummus With Roasted Red Peppers
Prep time: 10 minutes

Ingredients
1 15.5-oz can chickpeas, rinsed and well-drained
1/2 cup chopped roasted red peppers (from jar) plus extra for garnish
3 tbsp tahini (sesame paste)
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp lemon zest
1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for garnish
Salt, to taste

Instructions
Blend all ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Transfer to bowl and top with some chopped roasted pepper and a drizzle of olive oil. Serve.

The Omaha Building

There are a number of buildings in Omaha that I consider among my favorite, but there just something about the Omaha National Bank Building that especially special.

In Rapture ((Week of Feb. 16))

  • Think about what you stand for. Your passions in life. Are you living your life in a way that supports these passions? If you're not, read this and figure your shit out in a way that ends in you being positively happy and fulfilled by just being you and doing what you love. (mostly this is a note to myself).

  • I've been following the blog Tomboy Style for some time, because I really enjoy it's perspective on fashion and it's throwback to Tomboys of the past. Recently, Tomboy Style collaborated with FairEnds to create these awesome hats and I'm in love with the simplicity and impact of the design and color combinations.

  • Honestly WTF recently published this little article in praise of the bandana and I can't tell you how excited I am for spring. Seriously you guys, I need spring to be here soon.

  • Speaking of which, can we talk about these amazing bandanas from Kiriko

Wind Down / Wound UP

Friday the 13th. Freaky Friday. For me, it's been a pretty terrible day, so I hope you all out there haven't fallen prey to the 13th monster either.

Superstition or not, there are a lot of events going on in our fair city this weekend. So as you wind down from the work week, get wound up for the next few days off.

FRIDAY Feb 13th
  • Happy Galentine's Day y'all! What a Galentine's Day indeed with this event hosted by Hello Holiday. Come celebrate their launch of their new collaboration with Tuesday Bassen. If you're not in Omaha, don't fret, you can still shop the online collection!
  • Continuing with the Galentine's Day theme, it's a big day in Omaha since MF-ing Sleater-Kinney is here to play the Slowdown tonight. This event has been sold-out for months now, so if you bought tickets back in October like I did, I'll see you tonight.
  • I really, really wish I had tonight free so I could go to Lincoln for this.
  • There's a wine party tonight at Foodbank of the Heartland from 7 - 10. Help support our local food bank and try some new wines!!
  • Tonight also marks the beginning of Omaha Beer Week. So if beer is your Valentine this year, here's a look at the ongoing events in town this weekend.
  • If you want to avoid any major crowds tonight, head to O'Leaver's to see the Sucettes and Well Aimed Arrows.

SATURDAY Feb 14th

SUNDAY Feb 15th
  • WHY DIDN'T I KNOW ABOUT THIS EVENT EARLIER?! I love Blatt, Brunch and for this instance, I can even like Beer!
  • I feel like people have been talking about this show, but I'm not so sure who Lights is?
  • The OEA's are tonight y'all! Get ready for the year's most anticipated event that doesn't mean a goddamn thing.
We're going to be feeling all of these this weekend. All. of. these.

    …And Unknown Pleasures

Yesterday, we posted about St. Cecilia's annual Flower Festival, and today we're posting more photos with a somewhat different spin from before. I had the realization when I edited these photos to be Black & White, they gained not only so much texture and depth, but they'd all make pretty alright New Wave album covers. Enjoy!
